A small bindery for books that matter
Kestrel Bindery is a hand bookbinding studio in Portland, Oregon. We repair treasured volumes, create custom journals one at a time, and teach the craft on Saturday mornings. This is slow, careful work—the kind that respects both the book and the hands that made it.
Repair
Your books have histories. We mend them with care—rebacking cracked spines, resewing loose signatures, releathering worn covers, mending torn pages, and building protective boxes for volumes too fragile to hold without hands. We work on family Bibles that have traveled generations, cookbooks marked with a grandmother's notes, university library copies, and the personal collections people have spent lifetimes gathering.
Custom Journals
We make journals that will outlast their makers. Coptic stitch and long-stitch bindings, leather and bookcloth covers, hand-marbled or letterpress endpapers—each book is bound to your specifications. They become wedding guest books that hold handwritten wishes, artist sketchbooks for years of daily work, personal journals where thoughts become permanence.
Saturday Workshop
Learn to bind a journal in three hours. Every Saturday morning at the studio, we welcome eight beginners at a time to fold, sew, and bind their own Coptic-stitch journal. No experience needed. You'll leave with a book you made with your own hands and the knowledge to make more.
